Mixed results for men's teams in final pre-season games

Both men's teams were in action today as the manager's put the final touches to their teams before the season kicks off next Sunday.

The first team were at home to Moyne Rangers second team and were happy enough to record a 3-2 win in a game where the lead constantly changed hands. Our lads enjoyed the majority of the possession but a mistake early in the game saw Moyne being awarded a free kick which they duly put to the back of the net. Tombrack continued to press forward and midway through the half, they won a free kick and player manager Joe Newe fired the ball to the back of the net.

Kevin Kenny was impressing on his first team debut and was causing the Moyne defence some problems as was the experienced Savo and some good work by both players saw a Savo shot deflected to the net by a Moyne defender.

Moyne came in search of an eqialiser and once again a sloppy pass by the Tombrack defence allowed Moyne in to score and tie the game up a 2-2. However, Tombrack were to have the final say when Jamie Walsh broke through to lob the keeper with fifteen minutes to go and wrap up a 3-2 victory.

Meanwhile, the second team traveled to Castlebridge to take on Bridge Rovers second team and found the home side in clinical scoring form and had the Tombrack defence under pressure from the start. Two first half goals saw the home side lead at half time and a three goal burst early in the second half saw them put the result beyond any doubt.

Eoghan Murphy did manage to pull one back when he rounded the keeper but it was just a consolation as Bridge rounded off their 6-1 with a late goal.

Manager John Brownrigg acknowledged "it was not an ideal result with the season kicking off next week but Bridge Rovers are a good side and will do well Division Three A" and added "our lads did show well at times and some positives can be taken from the game"

Next weekend will see the season kick off with both men's teams in action on Sunday while Saturday will see the Youths, Under Ten, Twelve and Fourteen schoolboys likely to be in action and fixtures will be posted here once confirmed

Under Thirteen Boys find it tough against Carnew

The Under Thirteen Boys played a friendly against Wicklow League side Carnew AFC on Friday evening and found the Wicklow League side who managed to be clinical in front of goal, taking their chances.

Despite the 7-0 defeat, it must be remembered that this was the first appearance on a full size pitch for some of these players plus the quality of the opposition must also be taken into account as Carnew will be one of the favourites to lift the premier title in the Under Thirteen Wicklow League.

However, manager Bob Newe will be looking for a more cohesive performance when they kick off in the league in a few weeks time and will expect his forwards to be a little more clinical in front of goal when the opportunity arises

Youths put in good display in Nurney

Last night saw the Youths team travel to Nurney Villa for a pre season friendly and manager Willie Maher was content with the performance despite losing by the odd goal in five.

A strong physical home side go off to a good start and led 2-0 before our lads found their feet and began to press forward and were rewarded when Kevin Kenny pulled one back. Tombrack continued to press forward in search of an equaliser and got back on level terms when Glenn Jacob scored to make it 2-2.

The game looked to be heading for a draw until the home side scored a long range spectacular goal with three minutes remaining to snatch victory

Despite the defeat, Maher was happy with the overall team performance, especially the performances of 15 year olds Alan Carton and Josh McMullan who were both making their debuts at this level.

The team now look forward to next Saturday when they kick off their league campaign in Division Four where they will compete with Ajax Athletic, Wexford Celtic 2nds, Wexford Albion 3rds, St Josephs and Camolin Celtic

Squad: Leanne Kenny, Amy Cashe, Tia Byrne, Saoirse Harris, Paulina Farynik, Nicola Ryan, Ashling Crawte, Mary Clare McCrea, Nadine Fortune, Shannon McGovern, Shauna McGovern, Megan Allen Kenny, Shannon Hayes, Niamh Murphy, Becky Connaughton

Tough Task Ahead in Division One

With all the teams being now confirmed for this seasons men's Wexford League Division One, our lads know that a tough road lies ahead in what looks, on paper, to be one of the most competitive divisions in recent years.
With Eleven teams in the division, we will be facing twenty tough league games and several people involved in Wexford soccer are of the opinion that this division is on a par with the lower half of the Premier division and any of the teams in division one would be capable of holding their own in the top division

Here is a quick synopsis of who our lads will be up against

Curracloe United: A strong young side, relegated from Premier last season,  who will be hopeful of a quick return to the top division
Ferns United: Had good runs in outside competitions last season but could not transfer that form to the league but if they get off to a good start, are capable of winning the division
St Josephs: Last season's division two winners, are on a resurgence back up the divisions and will be looking to continue that run this season
St Cormacs: Runners up in division two and Neil O Sullivan Cup runners up, Luke Foran Park will not be an easy place to come away from with three points
Corach Ramblers: Won the Neil O Sullivan Cup last season and probably have one of the best teams in the club in recent years.
Forth Celtic: Third place finish last season and lost play off for promotion, will feel promotion to the the premier division is well within their capabilities
St Leonards: If they can find consistency, they are capable of a push for the title but need to get off to a good start
Wexford Bohs: Would like to get themselves back in the top division after a few years in division one where they have yet to make a major impact
Bridge Rovers: Always a difficult side to beat and will always be pushing hard for promotion and will believe they are well capable of getting there
Taghmon United: Finished level with us on points last season, have established themselves well in this division and always a tough opponent

All of the above are decent sides and no easy games can be expected, the positive from Tombrack side is its probably looking like one of our stronger squads since being promoted to this division, most of the lads have now the experience of playing at this level, while some of the pre season friendlies have looked very positive for us.

Savo strike overcomes Rangers in drama filled friendly

With both sides low on numbers, Tombrack and Gorey Rangers men's teams still managed to produce an exciting friendly before our lads eventually came out 2-1 winners.
Premier side Rangers started the game well and looked comfortable in possession although they did find the well marshaled Tombrack defence difficult to break down. However, they did go ahead when they scored midway through the half with a well taken goal and were looking comfortable at this stage.  Our lads were managing to create some chances and on one of those occasions, James Coleman was taken down for a penalty, which taken by Bob but was well saved by the keeper, however, Richie O Hara was on hand to knock the rebound into the net.
Darragh Hendrick and Bob Newe were proving very strong in defence and restricting Gorey's chances while Rory Newe and Jamie Murphy were creating all sort of problems for the home side as the first half ended all square.
The second half was very much as the first half with Gorey enjoying the possession but Tombrack were well in control of the situation and were growing in confidence as the game progressed and ten minutes from the end, Savo slotted the ball into the net to put the lads 2-1 ahead.
The drama wasn't over yet as Rangers came in search of an equaliser and were awarded a penalty with five minutes to go but keeper Alan Owens topped off a good overall display by saving the spotkick and Tombrack held on for a 2-1 win
Overall manager Joe Newe was happy with the performance and content with how the team is shaping up as the season quickly approaches

Women open pre season with win over Courtown

A blistering first half performance saw Tombrack travel to Courtown and come away 5-1 winners in their first pre season friendly of the new season. New signings Sarah Merrigan and Mary Boland made their club debuts but it was a player who was playing her final game for the season before heading off on her travels, Ciara Ryan, who opened the scoring on seven minutes to put Tombrack deservedly ahead after Tammy Hennessy had brought a good save from the home keeper. Tombrack continued to press forward and five minutes later Saoirse Harris lifted the ball over the advancing keeper to make it 2-0 and then Ciara broke through the defence to make it 3-0 on twenty minutes.
Tammy, who had been working very hard throughout the forty five minutes, deservedly made it 4-0 before half time.
Despite the 4-0 scoreline, Hibs did have their chances but found the Tombrack defence impenetrable and chances were kept to a minimum and anything that did break through was dealt with by keeper Ashling Kavanagh.
As changes were made on a regular basis, the intensity went out of the second half but Tombrack continued to press forward with Sarah, Ciara, Tammy, Marie and Mary all bringing saves from the very competent Courtown keeper.
The fifth goal came when Kelli Maguire tapped in a Ciara Ryan corner with Courtown having the final say when they scored an injury time consolation goal.
Manager Peter Doyle was happy with the overall performance of the team but was clear to state "Its only a pre-season friendly and we need to continue to work hard to be ready for the new season but the mixture of youth and experience is coming together well and we have a lot to build on"

Squad: Ashling Kavanagh, Casey Doyle, Eimear Whelan, Tia Byrne, Mary Boland, Marie Allen, Sarah Merrigan, Kelli Maguire, Saoirse Harris, Ciara Ryan, Tammy Hennessy, Mary Martin.

Newe happy with performance despite defeat to Hibs

The men's A team took on a well organised Courtown Hibs today and despite going down 2-0, manager Joe Newe was happy with the performance against the premier side. A couple of mistakes proved costly for Tombrack and conceded twice through unforced errors although Courtown must be given credit on their ability and sharpness in front of goal.
Newe was a little disappointed with the numbers avaialble for selection today with some key players missing for various reasons and with the season kicking off in three weeks and he stated "hopefully all players will be available when we take on Gorey Rangers next weekend"
Despite these problems, he was more than happy with the performance with the squad in this game as they held possession for long periods of the game while creating several chances with Darragh Hendrick in particular especially effective pressing forward. Rory Newe also performed well in midfield while new signing Jason Maguire continues to impress in the goal
Courtown look like a team who will be strong in the premier division this season and when presented with opportunities in this match, they had no problems capitalising on them and were fully deserving of their two goal victory.
However, if Tombrack continue to perform well in these pre season games against higher ranked sides, they too, will go into division one feeling well capable of launching a realistic push for at least promotion

Mens B team on top in nine goal thriller

Our men's B team took on Carnew Celtic this morning in Ballyboy and despite being forced to make several changes from Friday night, they eventually overcame the Wicklow League side by the odd goal in nine.
The visitors took an early lead when a long ball over the top ended up in the net despite Tombrack having started very well. However, the lads quickly got back into the game and were back on level terms when Jamie Murphy found the net and minutes later they were ahead when Eoin Carton scored.
A long range free kick scord by Jamie Murphy increased the lead before Willie Power hit the net with a volley to give Tombrack a comfortable 4-1 lead

A lapse of concentration in the second half saw Carnew capitalise on defensive errors to come back into the game to score three times in quick succesion, two of them penalties, to tie up the game at 4-4.

However the introduction of Kevin Kenny into the team settled Tombrack down and his pinpoint pass found Jamie Murphy in space and he slotted the ball into the net to complete his hat trick and give Tombrack  victory

Manager John Brownrigg was delighted with the character shown by his players despite having a small squad today due to several key players being away

Also best wishes to Eoin Carton for a speedy recovery after he picked up a nasty injury in this match.

Squad: Jason Watchorn, Mikey Kenny, Willie Harte, David Kennedy, David Fox, Jamie Murphy, Willie Power, Daryl Kearns, Kieran Kenny, Eoin Carton, John Ryan, Kevin Kenny, James Kehoe

B team disappointed with result but happy with overall performance

The men's second team made the short trip to Ballycarney on Friday evening to take on Castledockrell United and despite going down 5-1, they were happy overall with the performance and manager John Brownrigg was in a position to try out several players in different positions.
He will be disappointed that three of the goals came from basic errors but a lot of that can be put down to first game back and playing a side who are a couple of divisions above them.
A nervous start saw the home team score twice but Tombrack settled down after that and finished the first half much stronger and were playing the better football for long periods. James Kehoe did pull one back when his shot was deflected to the net but with changes being made, our lads lost their shape and conceded three more in the closing stages of the game. We also missed a penalty at a crucial time so despite the 5-1 defeat, the team did manage to create several opportunities and the result did flatter the home team.
This match saw Mark Melay, Michael Smyth, William Harte and Daryl Kearns make their senior debut for the club while John Ryan returned from Bunclody and David "Buggy" Kennedy has also returned to playing so this team are heading into Division Four A with more than a decent chance of at least promotion
