Volkswagon Wexford Cup Second Round
North End United "B" 1 Tombrack United 1 aet
(Tombrack won 4-3 on penalties)
Our lads are through to the third round of the Wexford Cup after they had to go all the way to a penalty shoot out to progress. There was never much between the sides and it was Tombrack who took the lead when Jamie Walsh shot to the net after some good possession but in the second half, the home side were awarded a penalty, which they scored, to bring the game to extra time. Tombrack had to play out the game with ten men as JJ got sent off in controversial circumstances but the lads dug in and when the game went to penalties, they held their nerve to go through to the last thirty two.
Men's Division Four A
Boolavogue United 4 Tombrack United 2
With three games to go in the league, our men's second team have given themselves an uphill battle to get promoted after this 4-2 defeat to Boolavogue. The two sides were just outside the top three going into this game but its the home side who have the advantage while our lads will probably need to win all three remaining games to have a chance of promotion. After a scoreless first half, Boolavogue went two up early in the second but Tombrack battled back onto level terms thanks to a goal from Jamie Murphy plus an own goal. However, as the game moved towards a finish, it was Boolavogue who got the breaks and scored two goals in the final ten minutes to take all three points.
Women's Division Three
Tombrack United 1 Bridge Rovers 0
The women have moved to within a point of clinching the title after they eventually broke down a very determined Bridge Rovers side in very difficult conditions. Rovers could have scored first only for a great save from Ashling Kavanagh and for most of the first half, the visitors enjoyed the better of the possession without really going close. Tombrack were much more focussed in the second half and went close when Chloe Hayden Doyle headed just wide after Katie O Toole had crossed while Tia Byrne brought a great save from the keeper with a well struck free kick which was pushed onto the crossbar. Breda Cushen eventually broke the deadlock with twenty minutes to go when she found space twenty five yards out to shoot to the bottom corner of the net. This proved to be the only goal of a very tight game and with three games to go, the women now just need a point to wrap up the title
Squad: Ashling Kavanagh, Mary Martin, Saoirse Harris, Eimear Whelan, Tia Byrne, Kelli Maguire, Marie Allen, Mary Boland, Breda Cushen, Katie O Toole (Leanne Kenny), Chloe Hayden Doyle (Tammy Hennessy) Sharon Walsh
